They thicken, catch paper and waste, and back the line up; cut them, and they regrow from the same joint next season.

Root intrusion is the signature sewer problem of older Portland neighborhoods. From Irvington and Alameda to Sellwood, St. Johns, and the inner east side, the sewer laterals running from the house to the city main are frequently 60 to 100 years old and built from vitrified clay tile in short, mortar-jointed sections — or from cast iron, or from 1945–1972 Orangeburg tar-paper pipe. Each of those has joints or weaknesses that the city’s mature tree canopy exploits, sending fine feeder roots toward the water and nutrients inside. The roots thicken, snag paper and solids, and produce the classic same-time-every-year backup.
A rooter — a sectional or continuous cable machine fitted with a cutting head sized to the pipe — cuts that root mass and restores flow quickly. But because roots regrow from the joint they entered, clearing alone is a temporary fix. That’s why we follow every clear with a Ridgid SeeSnake camera inspection: it shows exactly where the roots are entering and, just as importantly, whether the pipe around them is structurally sound or cracked, offset, bellied, or collapsing.
