Cable machine, root cutter, hydro jet. Clear the immediate blockage, scope for what's next.
Live 24/7 dispatch. Stocked trucks. Most repairs first-visit complete.
Rooter service is the catch-all term for clearing main-line and branch-line blockages with a cable machine. We use Spartan and Ridgid K-7500 for main lines (typically 75-100 ft of cable, 3/4" diameter), Ridgid K-1500 and K-400 for branch lines. Standard sequence: clear the blockage, then camera-scope to see what caused it. About 60% of main-line rooter calls in Portland's pre-1980 housing are root intrusion at clay tile lateral joints; the rest are scale buildup, hardened grease, or structural failures.

Rooter service calls split between residential mainline emergencies and routine drain maintenance. Most common: pre-1980 Portland home with a clay lateral now backing up at the kitchen drain or basement floor drain. Tree roots growing into mortar joints are the dominant cause. We see this pattern in inner-SE (Hawthorne, Belmont, Sellwood, Mt Tabor), inner-NE (Alberta, Irvington, Beaumont), N Portland (Mississippi, Kenton, St Johns), and Nob Hill / NW 23rd. Newer construction (post-1990) has far fewer root issues because the lateral materials (PVC, ABS, HDPE) don't have mortar joints for roots to colonize.
On the call: we ask about prior backups (recurring problem suggests root intrusion), affected fixtures (just one = branch line; all of them = main line), and home age (pre-1980 = clay or cast iron lateral likely). On-site we cable-clear first to restore flow, then camera-scope to see the cause. For root intrusion in clay tile, we recommend hydro jetting with a root cutter head to fully clear the mass — cable alone leaves enough root material that re-growth is rapid. Then we discuss whether trenchless CIPP lining makes sense as the long-term fix.
