Over a 12-year lifespan, the operating savings alone are $2,400–4,800.

Eligibility Requirements

Oregon Energy Trust rebate: Requires installation by a participating contractor (we are participating), an ENERGY STAR-certified heat pump water heater, and the customer must be served by a participating utility (Pacific Power or Portland General Electric). Submit the rebate form within 90 days of installation — we handle this paperwork at installation.

IRA 25C federal tax credit: Available to homeowners who install qualifying efficient water heaters in their primary or secondary residence. The 25C credit is a nonrefundable income tax credit — it reduces your federal tax liability by 30% of installed cost (parts and labor) up to $600. Claim on Form 5695 when filing your federal return. The credit is per-household per-year, not a lifetime cap — a Portland homeowner can claim it in successive years for different qualifying improvements.

Portland General Electric rebate: For PGE residential customers. Requires the heat pump water heater to meet specific efficiency thresholds (first-hour rating, uniform energy factor). PGE’s rebate program may require online application after installation with proof of purchase. We can confirm current PGE requirements at installation time.

Is a Heat Pump Water Heater Right for a Portland Home?

Heat pump water heaters work by extracting heat from ambient air rather than generating heat directly. In Portland’s mild climate — average annual temperature 53°F, rarely extreme cold — heat pump water heaters perform well year-round. The efficiency advantage is greatest in spring, summer, and fall when ambient air temperatures are in the 55–75°F range; efficiency decreases slightly in deep winter but remains superior to electric resistance at Portland’s typical winter temperatures (40–50°F lows).

Installation requirements: heat pump water heaters need a minimum of 700–1,000 cubic feet of ambient air space (a garage, utility room, or basement works; a tiny closet typically doesn’t), a dedicated 240V circuit (most Oregon homes have one for the existing electric water heater), and a condensate drain line. They also produce a dehumidifying effect and cool the surrounding space slightly — in Portland’s mild climate, this is generally a neutral or slight benefit.
